The Giannina Gaslini Institute was born out of an act of love and solidarity by its founder, Gerolamo Gaslini, who devoted his entire fortune first to the construction of the Hospital, and then to the establishment of the homonymous Foundation, which still stands by the Institute today.
Gaslini began its activity in 1938; since 1956, it has been recognized as a Scientific Institute for Maternal and Child Care.
It is a teaching hospital and a national and international reference center for pediatric, adolescent, and pregnancy-related pathologies, both rare and complex.

Gaslini has been accredited by the Joint Commission International as an Academic Medical Center continuously since 2007.
The University of Genoa is present through a convention: the Institute hosts the specialization schools of Pediatrics, Pediatric Surgery, and Child Neuropsychiatry.
It is the only Italian hospital where all specialties related to the maternal-neonatal area, both medical and surgical, are present. The Institute is located on a hill sloping towards the sea and occupies an area of over 74,000 square meters, 15,000 of which are dedicated to gardens and green space.
Currently, it consists of 21 interconnected buildings. A radical building intervention has been initiated, with the design of a new block dedicated to high-intensity care with 100 beds and the restructuring of the remaining pavilions organized by intensity of care.
The Hospital has over 350 regular beds, 60 day hospital beds, and day surgery facilities.
The staff consists of over 2,000 individuals.

Over 40% of patients come from all regions of Italy; 4% come from abroad, mainly based on agreements.
The Gaslini "welcome system" involves comprehensive care for the child and their family, truly placing them at the center of care pathways, to give voice to all patients, promote informed participation in treatment, and support therapeutic choices.
All staff actively participate in clinical research programs: the Impact Factor for the last year was over 2,771.030 with more than 385 publications in international journals.
